It’s not the first time J.J.Babbitt have paid homage to their coveted vintage models, with their previous release of a ‘New York’ and ‘Vintage’ model which I’m sure you’re aware of. But this time they’ve gone straight for the cash cow and released a ‘Florida’ model (or FL as is marked on the shank and box). Discuss
I’ve already seen a few reviews of these online where people compare the new FL models with various vintage Florida made ones. As with most online sax gear comparisons I find this both pointless and uninformative (great click-bait for an amazon affiliate links, I get it) but if you’ve played more than half a dozen Floridas you should know by now that they are all COMPLETELY different, not only is Otto Link historically inconsistent but a lot of the time these vintage Florida links have been worked on at some point in their long lives, hence two 7* Floridas from the same era can differ wildly, for a number of reasons.
I have a big vintage metal Otto Link Collection and play a Florida (no USA) as my main mouthpiece, so I’m very curious what the new release of Babbitt has to offer. T: Selmer SBA serial 50xxx (1953) - Otto Link Florida no USA 10. Rico Plasticover 2. Otto Link True Early Babbitt Tone Edge 4. alto saxophone mouthpiece. Otto link Florida tenor metal mouthpiece 1960,s MINT ORIGINAL CONDITION. Developed over several years, the new FL Otto Link is a superb blend of professional musician input and skilled jj Babbitt craftsmanship. Created through minor adjustments in virtually every aspect of the mouthpiece – inside and out – the FL expands the. ’Early Babbitt’ Otto Links are often considered by many players to be kind of the unsung heroes of the vintage Link family. If you can find a really good ’Early Babbitt’ it might be better than a lot of ’Florida’ and ’New York’ vintage pieces. Otto Link also changed their.
So rather than pointlessly compare the new FL to some random vintage Florida, I’m just going to quickly point out the most obvious thing which Babbitt have done to make their new FL play a bit different which may or may not be reminiscent of some vintage Floridas.Let’s talk about tip baffle, it’ basically all about the tip baffle..
Some of the most edgy ‘Coltrane-esque’ Floridas I’ve tried have had a noticeable amount of tip baffle, I’ve read in quite a few places that JC himself used to actually stick a bit of extra baffle in his mouthpiece to get some more edge. Lad.
J.J.Babbitt haven’t just stamped the F word on a slightly different take on the standard Link (like before) they’ve actually gone to town on the front end of this mouthpiece making it noticeably more pokey than any of their other metal mouthpieces, the tip baffle is not only set higher but is considerably longer. I’m baffled, what does this mean?
Well instead of being the usual fluffy Link that’s not tremendously happy when you give it the big spuds, the FL model offers up power, edge and projection more readily than their warmer predecessors. I’m not talking about an obnoxious level of binary power (nothing close to Guardala, Dukoff etc) just a more accessible tone palette… whilst maintaining that quintessential Link warmth.
If you’ve always loved the sound you get with a link but your performance demands are much wilder, this might be the chap and pretty reasonable when you think that a good link copy from a top maker can cost £500+ these days. But if you’re hoping this will curb your enthusiasm for hunting for THAT perfect vintage link I’m afraid you won’t be deleting your eBay account just yet, because after all this is NOT a vintage Flordia Link….and you ARE mental. And you know it.
And if you’re dying to buy one be quick because I only managed to get a few!
Otto Link Mouthpieces, Past and Present

Otto Link Mouthpiece: The Definitive Guide

As a preface to this guide, I would like to give insight on my experience with these mouthpieces. With any mass-manufacturing process there is an obvious need for quality control. Like every company, Otto Link has and continues to do their best to ensure that every product that is distributed is properly made. This is a great system we have, however we do not live in a perfect world. When professionally adjusted, every single one of the mouthpiece that I discuss will definitely play BETTER. Of course there are limits to how much a mouthpiece can be refaced (just as you can only rotate your tires so many times before they need replacing), but a mouthpiece is a tool and should be treated as so (when a tool is broken, it is corrected). I see far too many original mouthpieces in terrible adjustment yet the current market dictates that originality should command more than playability.
Another issue that seems to always arise is the new-vs-vintage argument. These tools are made with the principle that the user has a command over their instrument. On the saxophone, one must master the harmonic overtone series to have a clear command over every aspect of their instrument. The late Joe Allard was world renowned for his methods into saxophone embouchure development (along with others eg. Sigurd Rascher, Larry Teal) and any serious student of the saxophone should study those concepts to great lengths. Otto Link still makes great mouthpieces. Their design is different from previous years, but it was always changing. Since we live in a world of individuality and difference, there will always be choice, and personal preference. Some players adore the new design, and some do not. Otto Link is constantly working on new ideas and will hopefully keep releasing great tools to for us to make great music.
METAL OTTO LINK MOUTHPIECES:
Master Link Series: These mouthpieces were actually the first production mouthpiece by Otto Link. There is some debate that Lelandais had used the same blanks/design for their “Supere-Jazz Modele” as both mouthpieces are notoriously similar. These pieces were pioneered by Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, etc. While they came in smaller facings they are very lush sounding mouthpieces, and when refaced well they can be a spectacular mouthpiece. Steve Grossman currently uses a 4**** model. In value, they usually reach around the $350 mark however excellent condition originals, as well as superbly refaced examples can reach over $500.
Master Link (NYC, NY)
-These mouthpieces featured a large chamber (the largest ever in Otto Link production)
-First mouthpieces had an integral ligature much like a Sugal, or Lawton which clipped into the cut-outs on the side of the mouthpiece
Master Link 4**** (NYC, NY)
-Basically identical on the insides to the previous model, but they lost the cut-outs on the exterior of the mouthpiece and were issued with the first slip on lig offered by Otto Link, with no ridge.
Tone Master Series: These mouthpieces were the pieces that really put them on the map in my opinion. They were so good that Bobby Dukoff started to make pieces that were almost exactly the same. Soon enough the mouthpiece was seen on albums like Blue Train and everybody had to have an Otto Link. In value, these usually reach $500 and under, but once again. Excellent condition originals, and expertly refaced examples have reach close to $1000 online.
Tone Master (NYC, NY)
-These mouthpieces boasted a smaller chamber, and considerably more baffle material than the previous models, making them able to project like no other mouthpiece.
-Issued with large slip on ligs with Otto Link written in a circle on the thumb screw.
“New and Improved” Tone Master (NYC, NY)
-Same chamber, but higher baffle and in a red & white box stating, “New and Improved”
Super Tone Master Series: These mouthpieces were the next mouthpiece in a long succession of “Super Tone Master” mouthpieces. The first models, the “Double Ring” are highly prized among players/collectors due to their excellent playability and their fame due to previous legends who have played them over the years. In value, these mouthpieces generally lie in the $500-$1000 range, but excellent condition originals, and expertly refaced examples have exceeded $2000 online.
Super Tone Master Double Ring (NYC, NY)
-The first STM made (also came in a red & white box with a NYC address)
-These pieces boasted an even smaller chamber (though still very large) and a longer baffle.
-They also had the address stamped on the shank like the Tone Masters and issued with the same ligs.
Super Tone Master Double Ring (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-Essentially the same exact mouthpiece as previous, but the address was not on the shank and they came in black & gold boxes.
Super Tone Master No USA (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-First ones came in black & gold boxes, most came in the gold & black writing boxes
-Used by Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, etc.

Super Tone Master USA (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-Same exact mouthpiece as previous release except with USA stamped on the shank in big letters
Super Tone Master USA Big Font (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-Somebody coined these as “Early Babbitt” mouthpieces a few years ago, however they came in gold boxes with black writting addressed to 21 SW 5th St. not 121 SW 5th St.
-These were shorter than the previous model, with different body dimensions inside and out.
-They also had narrower tips than the previous STMs.
Super Tone Master USA Big Font (Elkhart, IND)
-These are what I call the real Early Babbitt mouthpieces.
-They came in P.O. Box boxes addressed in Elkhart IN, and 2201 Industrial Pkwy boxes.
-They have the number on the side.
Super Tone Master USA Shank Tip (Elkhart, IND)
-These are the modern Links that everybody’s learned to love and hate.
Super Tone Master NY USA (Elkhart, IND)
-These are the 90s release of the NY chamber
-It looks exactly like the previous, but NY is stamped just under the Super Tone Master
-They have a larger chamber and a wider tip.
-Darker than the previous.
Super Tone Master “Millenium” Special Edition (Elkhart, IND)
-These were a Limited Release (only 2000 made), just like the Meyer New York re-release
-Made from nickel plated brass, with a blue biteplate
-They have 2000 stamped where NY was stamped on the NY model
-They came in Silver & Blue boxes, with brass ligs and caps (I don’t know why).
HARD RUBBER OTTO LINK MOUTHPIECES:
Master Link Eburnated Bar: These pieces were originally made in response to the success of the Master Link brass mouthpieces. They were marketed as a budget line but it was realized very quickly that there was a big market for hard rubber mouthpieces. Value-wise, they only really reach $450 or lower.
Master Link Eburnated Bar (NYC, NY)
-Very large chamber with not much baffle.
-The very first “Slant Sig” mouthpieces
Reso Chamber Eburnated Bar:These pieces were really a transition between the previous model, and the Tone Edge. These are very nice mouthpieces, and they acted as the Tone Master for the rubber line. In regards to value, these pieces generally lie in between the $500-$1000 range.
Reso Chamber Eburnated Bar (NYC, NY)
-Thick beak.
-They came in white boxes with black writing.
-Not too much baffle material
Tone Edge Series: These mouthpieces were the latest release. They were release around the time of the double-ring STM in NYC, NY and are what most people refer to as the “Slant Sig”. The irony of that name, is that there are 3 different types (including the master Link HR), all being completely different playing mouthpieces. These mouthpieces were selling for over $1000 at one point, but have settled into the $400-$1300 range (depending on condition and facing)
Tone Edge “Slant Sig” (NYC, NY)
-Facings stamped on table
-Fat body, fat beak, straighter baffle closer to the Reso-Chamber mouthpiece.
-Came in a white & blue box
Early-Tone Edge “Slant Sig” (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-Facings stamped to the right of the table.
-Slightly slimmer beak than previous.
-Slim rounded shanks, the largest chamber of the Tone Edges and very nice pieces.
-Came in white boxes with orange writing.
Late-Tone Edge “Slant Sig” (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-The first change in the Tone Edge body shape, and interior dimensions
-More attention was placed on the baffle shape
-Flat bottom shank, with shorter beak.
Tone Edge USA “Slant Sig” (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-Same exact mouthpiece as above but they have a large font USA on the shank
Tone Edge “Straight Sig” (Pompano Beach, FLA)
-Different rubber compound
-Same exact blanks as above but the signature is written across as opposed to on an angle and USA is on the shank
Tone Edge “Straight Sig” (FLA/Elkhart, IND)
-These are what I call an early Babbitt mouthpiece.
-They came in 21 SW 5th St. boxes as well as P.O. Box Elkhart addresses.
-They have a fatter beak, and a different rubber compound than the previous models.
-Early ones have very synthetic looking baffles and they all have a small USA font on the shank.
-They are also very nice, and they are totally different from the two previous “Slant” bodied pieces
Tone Edge small-USA (Elkhart, IND)
-Fatter bodied
-Made from the same material as previous
-They had a thicker beak
-The baffles were not as pronounced as the last ones.
Modern Tone Edge small USA (Elkhart, IND)
-These are the same shape as the new Links
-They featured the same rubber compound as the last
-Considerably less baffle material
-They always seem to have a very fuzzy nature to them

Modern Tone Edge small USA (Elkhart, IND)
-These are the same exact mouthpiece as the previous piece except for the rubber is the worst grade of rubber to date (possibly due to quality control?).

-These are the same body shape as the new ones, yet the have a V stamped in the chamber on the opposite side of the table
-I am not sure, but I think that these pieces were inspired by Paul “Doc” Tenney.
-They have lots of baffle material to work with and are made from an excellent grade of rubber, reminiscent of the old FLA blanks.

Advanced features/comments
*Always ensure that the ’[’ and ’]’ brackets match in number, ie: thereshould always be the same number of each type. Note:non matching brackets are not tested before the string in interpreted, aproblem only occurs when a stack overflow situation is encountered.
*Polygons (using ’{’ and ’}’) cannot be nested, ie: there can only be oneopen at a time. If a polygon open symbol ’{’ is encountered while anotherpolygon is still open it will be ignored. If a polygon is left open when theend of the string is reached it will be automatically closed.
*For a complete list of predefined symbol meanings look at the SYMBOL listunder the ACTION menu.
*Best quality hardcopy line drawing images can be obtained by usingMacDraw or Claris CAD. In both cases copy the image as a line drawing, paste itinto MacDraw say, set the lines to black and line width 0.1mm, then print on aLaserWriter. Note: the number of lines can quickly approach the thousands andeven tens of thousands, don’t expect the printing to be fast.

Last week, an online amateur radio retailer contacted me about writing some blog posts for his website. One of the topics he suggested was “Choosing an HF vertical.” Here’s what I wrote this morning:Choosing an HF vertical

For many amateur radio operators, a vertical antenna may be the only option they have to put up an HF antenna. They may, perhaps, live on a small lot, or they may not have suitable trees or other antenna supports from which they can hang dipoles.
Fortunately, there are many good products on the market. Unfortunately, there is some confusion about the different types of verticals out there. This short article will attempt to give you some guidance on how to choose the right vertical for you.
Trap verticals
Trap verticals have been around for a very long time. My very first HF antenna back in 1971 was a hy-gain 14AVQ. These verticals use “traps” that are parallel resonant circuits to electrically isolate portions of the antenna when transmitting on various bands. The traps make the antenna act as if it were a resonant quarter-wave vertical. For example, when the 14AVQ is being used on the 10m band only the lower portion of the antenna is active. When operating 40m, the entire length of the antenna is active.
*The Titan is a center fed GAP vertical, that provides a host of benefits in a rugged, yet manageable form. The Titan offers broad, continuous frequency coverage in a no tune, easy to assemble format. Designed to work in a limited space or as the perfect compliment to an antenna farm.
*After a lot of research, I purchased a Gap Titan DX from the Amateur Electronic Supply store in Las Vegas. The antenna is advertised as covering all bands 40 through 10 (including WARC) with SWR of 2:1 or less, and 100 KHz. Of 80 meters at 2:1 or less. A small capacitor at the top of the antenna determines what portion of the 80 meter band is.
Trap verticals need radials to operate effectively, and the more the merrier. Take this into consideration, when deciding whether or not to purchase a trap vertical.
No-radial verticals
In recent years, several manufacturers have introduced vertical antennas that do not need radials. GAP Antennas is one manufacturer that offers these kinds of antennas.
The manufacturers claim that these antennas are more efficient than trap verticals, and many amateurs use them with good results. There are some drawbacks, however. They can be difficult to tune, and they do require mounting at some distance above ground. The reason for this is that they are, in effect, vertical dipoles and if the end of the antenna is too close to ground, capacitive coupling will detune the antenna.
Non-resonant vertical antennas
A third class of vertical antenna that is becoming popular is the non-resonant vertical antenna. An example of this type of antenna is the LDG S9v43 Vertical Antenna, although several other manufacturers also make this type of antenna.
One reason that this type of vertical antenna is becoming popular is that it can be used across a wide frequency range. The resonant frequency of this antenna is actually about 5.4 MHz. With an antenna tuner, however, you can use the antenna on all bands from 80m to 6m. Adobe photoshop mac download cs6.
This tuner can be located in your shack, but for the lowest loss, you will want to locate the tuner near the base of your antenna. Don’t try using it with the internal tuner in your rig. On some frequencies, the antenna impedance will be quite high, and most internal rig auto tuners do not have adequate range to provide a 50-ohm match.
These antennas require radials. There is no formula to calculating the length of the radials, but they should be at least 0.2 wavelength at the lowest frequency that you wish to operate.Gap Titan Dx Manual
We carry the entire line of LDG vertical antennas. The LDG S9v43 antenna is 43 ft. high and covers 80m – 6m, the LDG S9v31 antenna is 31 ft. high and covers 40m – 6m, and the LDG S9v18 antenna is 18 ft. high and covers 20m – 6m. All of these antennas use heavy-duty, telescoping fiberglass sections. The antenna is self-supporting, and because it’s very light weight, easy to install.

I know it’s not a comprehensive guide to how to choose an antenna, but that’s not the intent. I also know that it’s a bit slanted towards the non-resonant vertical, but that’s the kind of antenna that the company carries. I found the GAP Titan. For the most part, it was recommended by most owners. I happened to see a used one for sale at a reasonable price so I figured I’d see what the excitement was all about. After a lengthily battle with the seller who intended to shaft me by not sending the antenna, I finally ’convinced’ him to send it. I cleaned it up and installed it only to find it didn’t work. After several calls to GAP (great support) and two replacement orders later, I finally got it working. Seems it was either over powered or maybe even hit by lightening. Now I know why the seller didn’t want to send it. What a guy. These pictures detail the story. These pictures were taken near the end of September 2004. The first thing I found was the capacitor located at the top of the antenna has been damaged. The Titan is good for 100khz of bandwidth on 80m and this cap set the portion of the band that the antenna is resonant on. Customer specifies when ordering the Titan.

The following pictures are for help with assembly. The Titan manual is a bit lacking when it comes to detailed information on exactly where to place some of the parts. I talked with tech support and asked for the preferred locations. After assembly, I took these photos to document the locations and had tech support view and verify that everything was correct. My hope is that this might help those that are having the same questions I had.

Turns out the internal coax assembly was fried. My guess is the the original owner never had it working correctly and like I stated earlier, either burned it up or it was hit my a lightening strike. Fortunately, this has been my only bad experience buying used equipment from a Ham. I am impressed with the quality and beefy hardware as compared to the MFJ-1798. I didn’t get to compare the two against each other but I did favor the Titan for these and other reasons. It does work fairly well and makes a great back-up antenna too so I’m keeping it. Plus in my opinion, it looks really cool!

The Pixel Bender Filter and Photoshop CS5. The Pixel Bender filter is a free filter that works with Adobe Photoshop CS5. Do you use a PC? Microsoft has instructions to turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off. Here’s how:

Hackers may target your home wireless router to gain access to your network. That means they might access things like your emails, social media or bank accounts that you’re logged in to, personal schedule, and webcam.
Here are a few basic tips to help protect against that.
*Create a name and password for your router in Security Settings, then select a type of encryption (more about his in No. 2 below).
Tip: Avoid naming your router something that can easily be associated with you, such as your name or address. Also, make sure you create a complex password such as one using a random string of letters, numerals, and special characters.
*Choose the most secure and recent form of encryption available. That’s probably Wi-Fi Protected Access 2, also known as WPA2.

3. Be sure to save the updated information when prompted.4. Avoid all suspicious links
Cybercriminals can gain control over your device — including your webcam — by tricking you into installing malware.
That’s why you should never click on suspicious links in emails or download files from people you don’t know. This is one of the most common ways that hackers gain access to your devices.
What’s a smart defense? Only download attachments and click on links in emails from people that you trust. Even then, if something looks suspicious, call or text them to find out if it’s legitimate. You can also search a website link to see how safe it is.5. Don’t chat with strangers online

Here are a few dos and don’ts to consider if you decide to chat with a stranger.

6. Cover or unplug your webcam
If your camera has an indicator light, and it goes on — and you didn’t do it — it’s a likely sign your webcam has been hacked.
And if the indicator light doesn’t go on? Keep in mind that hackers can sometimes disable the light.
Indicator light aside, hackers have had real-life success hijacking webcams. For instance, hackers have used webcams to capture compromising images of unknowing victims and, in some case, have reportedly demanded ransom in exchange for not distributing the image or posting them on the web.
Some people, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, opt for at least one low-tech solution: covering the device’s camera with a sticker or tape. You can also purchase covers online that are designed to attach to your webcam. 7. Get a virtual private network (VPN)
Security software does a lot of the work in blocking malware that could lead to someone remotely taking control of your webcam — but it’s smart to add another layer of security.
That’s where a virtual private network comes in.
A VPN can increase your online privacy and anonymity by creating a secured, private network from any internet connection you access. That could be in your home or on a public Wi-Fi network.
Public Wi-Fi networks can be especially vulnerable to hacking, but a VPN helps protect the data you send and receive while accessing public networks. 8. Use trusted tech support
Unethical technicians could install remote-access programs when your computer is in the shop. Make sure you trust your tech. The same goes for remote support. Giving remote control of your computer could make you vulnerable to having your webcam hijacked. Always password protect your personal data before allowing a technician to access your computer, and ensure that you’ve read the technician’s privacy policy first. After their work is completed, it’s also a good idea to change the password to any program or system that the technician had remote access to, for an added layer of security.9. Install and run security software on your devices
You might associate “connectedness” with the Internet of Things, or IoT, devices in your home. Your security software also offers a kind of connectedness — a lot of the features work together to help protect you against webcam hacking and other threats.
Free security software is available, but it often lacks a multi-layered defense against cyberthreats and it often can’t keep up with new threats as they emerge.
Subscription software helps defend against ransomware, viruses, spyware, malware, and other online threats. It also helps protect your home network with a smart firewall and helps you manage protection for all your devices.How to check if your webcam is hacked
There are two steps you can take to help determine if your webcam is hacked.
1. Check your webcam light. If your light turns on while you are not using your webcam, there’s a chance that your webcam is hacked. However, another application running on your computer may have turned on the light, so ensure that all other applications are closed first.
However, just because your webcam light isn’t turned on doesn’t mean your webcam hasn’t been hacked. Sometimes, hackers can disable your light. Keep in mind, too, that it’s sometimes possible to turn off your webcam light in settings.
2. Run a security scan. By running a scan on your device to determine if your computer is infected, you can identify viruses or other security threats quickly and prevent their spread. For Windows 10 computers, go to Settings and find the Updates & Security tab, then click on Scan Now. You can also run a scan using your security software or downloading a reputable antivirus application.
At one time or another, you’ve probably had that feeling you’re being watched — even if it’s just you and your webcam.
That’s why it’s smart to know about webcam security. And that starts with learning how to secure your webcam and help prevent webcam hacking.
